IFEZ ? University of Illinois enters MOU opening a branch in Songdo, Incheon Incheon Free Economic Zone?s (IFEZ) commissioner, Jong-Chul Lee, and five other staff members visited Urbana-Champaign on Monday, June 27th and met with University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) chancellor, Robert Easter, and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) of opening an UIUC branch school in Songdo, Incheon, Korea. IFEZ is Korea?s free economic zone biggest representative; it assures foreign investors? corporate and economic trade. IFEZ commissioner Jong-Chul Lee has been determined to make Songdo flourish in biotechnology and medical. Additionally, through the establishment of Songdo Global Campus, IFEZ officials are visiting U.S. named universities and discussing matters in detail to attract foreign university branches to Songdo. Currently the fastest approved establishment authorization is New York?s Stony Brook. Stony Brook students are supposed to enter this September, 2011 in Songdo but, unfortunately, the registration of students has not been finalized and, therefore, is delayed. Among other universities that are looking forward to Songdo Global Campus are George-Mason University, Belgium Ghent University, University of Utah, and Alfred University. The Songdo Global Campus construction has been 70% completed. With IFEZ-UIUC MOU, a more rapid progress is presumed to be taken. Both parties are still negotiating for providing both online and offline courses, and according to the agreement UIUC is planning to establish a branch school for graduate courses in engineering, education, and library science.
